circa 1860 (II) (2013) is cast from the interior face of a nineteenth-century wooden door, retaining the creases of time and the tactile grain of the original surface. The translucent resin renders this “door” suspended between material presence and shadow—at once a sealed threshold and a thin membrane of memory.
Through this pared-down form, Whiteread evokes a heightened awareness of space and the body, allowing “absence” to become the central subject of perception. In doing so, she gives weight and presence to the intangible.
