Bernard Frize
Bernard Frize (b. 1949, Saint-Mandé, France) is a major figure in contemporary European abstraction, recognized for his systematic methods and his sustained inquiry into chance. Since the 1980s, he has worked within a rigorous set of self-imposed constraints—using the same eight colours, consistent mixtures of acrylic and resin, and predetermined structural formats such as grids or stripes. By minimizing subjective intervention, Frize allows process, material, and accident to shape the work. His paintings function as an “automatic system,” revealing the flow of vision and the traces of time within an apparently rational order.
