Created for the 2019 exhibition “Propaganda” at David Zwirner Hong Kong, Neo Rauch’s Sperre (2018) unfolds in muted tones of brown, gray, and aquamarine. A central female figure wielding small flags confronts a semi-nude hybrid man amid a backdrop of ambiguous structures and surreal gestures. The composition exemplifies Rauch’s fusion of realism and dreamlike distortion—his “psychological theatre” where past and present, ideology and desire, intersect. The title, meaning “barrier” or “blockage,” resonates both literally and metaphorically, evoking the tension between movement and stasis, conflict and communication that defines Rauch’s enigmatic pictorial world.
